Houma Christian started fast and never let up in Thursday’s District 10-1A game against Crescent City.
The Warriors scored 16 of the game’s first 19 points and built a 20-point lead by halftime en route to a 62-24 home victory over the Pioneers on Thursday.
Nate Frye and Shane Thompson led Houma Christian (11-8 overall, 7-1 district) with 16 points apiece, and Guy Campbell added 10 points.
“We’ve been telling the kids in practice that it’s got to be about solid defense, and we’ve been stressing that and blocking out and cutting down on the turnovers,” Houma Christian coach Freddie Frye said. “We feel like 1A is a very tough class. We’ve got to keep going in the same direction we’ve been going in and that’s stressing the fundamentals of defense, rebounding, playing as a team, and looking for our shots.”
They did that in this game.
Houma Christian led 18-4 after one quarter, and when Guy Campbell drove the baseline midway through the second quarter and made a layup off the glass, it gave the Warriors a 24-8 lead with just under four minutes to go in the
first half.
Crescent City wouldn’t reach double digits on the scoreboard until just over a minute to play in the first half, and by intermission, the
Warriors had a commanding 30-10 lead.
Houma Christian outscored the Pioneers, 19-3, in the third quarter — holding them to just one field goal — and carried a 49-13 lead into the final stanza.
Crescent City used some 3-point shooting in the fourth quarter to score nearly half of its 24 points with an 11-point effort, but most of the Pioneers’ shooting came against the Warriors’
bench.
“We told our (reserves) that we weren’t putting them in to change what we were doing after three quarters,” Frye said. “They’re expected to play solid defense and block out and run the sets that we run, and they didn’t do a bad job.”
Josh Ansardi had 10 points for the Pioneers (9-11, 1-5), who played Thursday’s game without top player Blake Quinvilan.
They were held to four points in the first quarter and six points in the second.
“Not having him was huge,” Pioneers coach Chris Bulliard said of Quinvilan. “I’ve never coached a team where so much relied on one player. All we can do is play as hard as we can, but everything runs through him — offense and defense. He’s our
catalyst.”
Devin Battaglia added six points for Houma Christian. Matt Swallen was the Pioneers’ second leading scorer with five points.

At Leesville, the Lady Cardinals (10-10 overall) extended their first-round playoff winning streak to 10 years after Carlie Sternfels made the match-winning goal in the second half.
“The girls played hard,” Lady Cardinals coach Don Grabert said. “They really wanted to keep that streak going, especially the seniors. They gave a really good effort, probably one of the better efforts of the year.”
The match was tied at 1 after the first half, and Mallory Marse and Allie Falgout also each scored goals for the Lady Cardinals.
Savannah Ellis got the victory in goal for E.D. White, which will travel to face Teurlings Catholic in the second round.
A date and time on that match has not yet been agreed on, but it must be played by Wednesday.
