BOURG — When National Signing Day came and went two weeks ago and South Terrebonne senior linebacker Devin Leger went unsigned, no one was more surprised than Gators head coach Richard Curlin.
After all, Leger, a linebacker, was a two-year starter, a Class 4A all-state player, The Courier and Daily Comet’s All-Region defensive MVP and helped lead the Gators to a 9-3 season and a trip to the second round of the playoffs where they fell to Karr, the eventual state runner-up, 21-7.
“I knew Devin would be playing somewhere, but it was kind of a surprise to us that more people weren’t coming after him,” Curlin said. “There must be a lot of talented athletes in the state for a kid like him to sign this late, but Devin will do well no matter where he’s at. He will make us proud.”
That place will be at Division III Louisiana College in Pineville. The Wildcats were 7-3 last season and play in the American Southwest Conference.
“I’m moving on from being a Gator to a Wildcat, and I can’t wait,” Leger, who signed a Letter of Intent on Tuesday at the South Terrebonne library in front of family, friends and coaches, said. “I want to contribute to a great season.”
Leger (6-foot, 190 pounds) had interest from Louisiana-Monroe, Northwestern State and Louisiana-Lafayette and received offers from Missouri Southern and Louisiana College.
