Terriers fall 2-1 on late goal in boys soccer playoffs

In a tied match late with the seconds left in regulation ticking away, a St. Louis Catholic boys soccer parent turned around and asked a question to her counterparts.

“How do they break a tie?,” she asked the group of blue and orange clad people behind her.

As she turned back around toward the field, on cue, Saints midfielder Alex Kjellsten answered her question.

Kjellsten scored when he whipped in an untouched corner kick with just over 2 minutes to play, breaking the tie and sending No. 1 St. Louis Catholic to a 2-1 Division II quarterfinal victory over no. 9 Vandebilt Catholic on Tuesday night at Buddy Marcello Stadium in Houma.

“It wasn’t exactly how we had it planned. Some corner kicks we try and whip that ball in and score on that back post, but Alex made a great corner,” St. Louis coach Jason Oertling said. “He made them make a decision. We are like Vandebilt. We work so hard on our set pieces and free kicks, and it paid off. It’s a great win.”

The nationally ranked Saints (27-1-4) from Lake Charles now move onto the Division II semifinals, one win away from playing for their ninth boys soccer title in school history.
