Assumption, Ellender girls finish tied at state powerlifting meet


It was the Ellender and Assumption girls powerlifting teams that put on a display of strength at the 2012 Louisiana High School Powerlifting Association Division I State Meet held at Alexandria Senior High School.

The state meet was held on Friday and Saturday with the Class 5A lifters competing on Friday and the Class 4A and 3A lifters compete on Saturday.

In the team competition, the Assumption and Ellender girls tied for second overall in Class 4A meet with 27 points each.

Lutcher won the 4A girls meet with a total of 63 points.

South Lafourche finished eighth in the Class 5A girls meet with two points. The Lady Tarpons lone representative was Kirstin Regan.

In the boys meet, Assumption came out third in Class 4A with 27 points. Ellender didn’t score in the 4A meet. South Lafourche competed in the Class 5A boys meet but did not score.

Tioga won the Class 4A boys meet with a total of 54 points, while St. Paul’s (41 points) won the Class 5A boys meet and Northshore (55 points) won the girls Class 5A meet.

The athletes were judged on three lifts — the squat, bench press and dead lift and the total weight of all three qualifying lifts determined the winners.

Ellender had one lifter finish first in her weight class as Karrigton Parfait won her 132-pound class with a total weight of 535 pounds. Ellender’s Victoria Guidry finished second in that same weight class behind Parfait with a total weight of 530 pounds.

Assumption had three lifters win weight classes.

Brittany Johnson won the 198-pound class with a total weight of 660 pounds in the girls meet.

Eddie Blanchard won the Class 4A boys 123-weight class with a total of 870 pounds.

Also in the boys meet, Matthew Theriot was first in the 148-weight class with a total of 1,075 pounds.

Assumption had a total of six girls finish in the Top 3 of their weight classes.

Besides Johnson winning the 198-weight class, Chelsie Landry finished second in the 105-weight class with a total of 515 pounds.

Brooke Medine was second in the 123-weight class with a total of 550 pounds, and Alli Berthelot was third in the 148-weight class with a total of 560 pounds.

Also for Assumption, Bianque Hills was third in the 181-weight class with a total of 610 pounds, and Jonisha Harris was third in the Super-Heavyweight class with a total of 605.

Ellender had five girls place at the meet.

After Parfait and Guidry took first and second in the 132-weight class, Mildred Joseph was third in the 114-weight class with a total of 485 pounds.

Kayona Miles was third in the 165-weight class with a total of 705 pounds and Brianna Travis was second in the 181-weight class with a total of 650.

In the Class 4A boys meet, Assumption had five lifters place in the Top 3 of their respective weight classes.

Besides Blanchard and Theriot, Jordan Delarosa was third in the 132-weight class with a total of 815, and Anquindas Brown was third in the 165-weight class with a total of 1,065.

Hunter Allemand came in third for the Mustangs in the 275-weight class with a total of 1,300 pounds.
