Vandebilt girls teams sweep at tournament

MATHEWS — Vandebilt Catholic's varsity and junior varsity girls soccer teams won their divisions at the Central Lafourche Winter Tournament on Sunday.
The Lady Terriers' varsity squad claimed the yellow division title with wins of 6-1 over Central Lafourche and 3-2 in the championship game over Hahnville.
Against Central Lafourche, Makelle Pena led the way with two goals, while Carly Ellender, Abby Thibodeaux, Kim Grasso and Grace Champagne all added one goal each. Emma Guidry got the win as goal keeper.
Against Hahnville, Champagne, Grasso and Pena all scored a goal, and Guidry was the winning goal keeper for the Lady Terriers, who improved to 6-0 overall on the season.
Vandebilt's junior varsity team captured the green division title, getting wins of 4-0 over H.L. Bourgeois, 3-0 over South Terrebonne, 8-0 over St. Charles Catholic and 4-0 over Thibodaux in the championship game. The Lady Terriers' junior varsity squad defeated all varsity teams in the tournament.
BROTHER MARTIN WINS BOYS TOURNAMENT
At Houma, Brother Martin's boys soccer team won the 2012 Brothers of the Sacred Heart tournament held at Vandebilt Catholic's Buddy Marcello Stadium on Sunday.
Brother Martin picked up a 1-0 victory over E.D. White Catholic and got a 1-0 win over Jesuit in the tournament finals to claim the championship. The Crusaders finished undefeated in tournament play.
Jesuit, the tournament's runner up, defeated Vandebilt, 2-0, before losing to Brother Martin.
The tournament, which was moved to Houma due to a field availability issue in New Orleans, featured several of the state's top junior varsity and varsity soccer teams
