GAMES OF THE WEEK
With area basketball teams wrapping up tournament play for the season over the weekend, they will now turn their focus to the start of respective district seasons.
While some of smaller schools are a week away from staring league action, the boys and girls team who compete in the local 5A district (District 7-5A), will be diving back into district action after New Year's Day.
Here are some of the top games involving area teams for the upcoming week.
On Wednesday, District 7-5A foes Terrebonne and South Lafourche will play in key boys and girls action in Galliano and Thibodaux will travel to Gray to face H.L. Bourgeois in another District 7-5A boys and girls matchup.
On Thursday in boys nondistrict action, E.D. White Catholic is at Houma Christian at 7:30 p.m. and in girls nondistrict play McDonogh 35 is at Vandebilt Catholic, 6 p.m.
There is a full slate of district and nondistrict games set for Friday night. Some of the top boys games include: Ellender at Central Catholic, 7 p.m. (nondistrict); Baker at St. James, 7 p.m. (nondistrict); Westgate at South Lafourche, 7 p.m. (7-5A); Central Lafourche at Terrebonne, 7 p.m. (7-5A); H.L. Bourgeois at New Iberia, 7 p.m. (7-5A); Vandebilt Catholic at Southern Lab, 7 p.m. (nondistrict); and South Terrebonne at Thibodaux, 7 p.m. (nondistrict).
On Friday night in key girls games Westgate is at South Lafourche, 6 p.m. (7-5A), Central Lafourche is at Terrebonne, 6 p.m. (7-5A) and Ellender is at Central Catholic, 6 p.m. (nondistrict).
GIRLS TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Vandebilt Catholic Lady Terriers took home the title at the Vermilion Catholic Tournament on Saturday night in Abbeville.
Vandebilt (15-3) beat Acadiana, Abbeville and Vermilion Catholic (championship) over the three-day event. Those three teams have a combined record of 31-14.
BOYS TEAM OF THE WEEK
The H.L. Bourgeois Braves improved to 14-3 on the season by ripping through the competition at the E.D. White Catholic Cane's Cardinal Classic over the weekend.
In wins over West St. John, E.D. White Catholic and Fontainebleau, the Braves posted an average margin of victory of 22.3 points per game.
STARS OF THE WEEK
Vandebilt Catholic's Lionheart Leslie (98 points) and Elijah McGuire (65) combined to score 163 points in four games in helping the Terriers place fourth at the Sunkist Shootout over the weekend in Lafayette.
E.D. White Catholic's Jordan Gros scored a total of 35 points in two wins at the Assumption Lady Mustangs Classic on Friday night.
Thibodaux's Trevon Cole went for 30 points in a win over Walker at the Plaquemine Tournament.
Shawn Cheramie of South Lafourche erupted for 28 points in a tournament victory over Centerville.
Marlin Bonvillain of H.L. Bourgeois and Datren Williams of Covenant Christian Academy each scored 27 points in wins last week.
John Williams of Central Lafourche posted a 24-point outing for the Trojans last week.
St. James player Jason Favorite scored 21 points and came down with 10 rebounds in a win for the Wildcats.
