Warren Easton beats Lady Terriers, 59-35

In a matchup of the Top 2 ranked girls basketball teams in Class 4A, No. 1 Warren Easton topped No. 2 Vandebilt Catholic 59-35 on Thursday night in New Orleans.

Warren Easton (22-0) is the top-ranked team in Class 4A and Vandebilt (20-4) is second according to the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association Poll.

Warren Easton led 13-9 after the first quarter, 30-19 at halftime and 51-25 after the third quarter of the nondistrict game.

"We kind of let it get away from us," Vandebilt coach Kathy Luke said. "We missed seven free throws in the first half and had a chance to make it a close game at halftime. If we hit those shots, it's a closer game."

Luke also said the big third quarter by Warren Easton was key. Easton outscored the Lady Terriers 21-10 in the third quarter.

"We missed two defensive assignments to start the third quarter, and they hit two quick 3s," Luke said. "They get rolling when they hit 3s, and we kind of let the third quarter get out of hand. They started rolling, but we actually beat them in the fourth quarter. We outscored them 10-8, but that third quarter really hurt us."

Shakira Harding led Vandebilt with 13 points.

The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 11 but was postponed after inclement weather kept the Lady Terriers from traveling to New Orleans.
