GAMES OF THE WEEK

With just a couple of weeks left in the high school basketball regular season, district races are winding down and playoff pushes are heating up.

Here is a look at some key games this week. Some games that were originally scheduled for Friday night have been moved to Thursday because of local Mardi Gras festivities.

On Tuesday in boys action, St. James is at Brusly in a major District 7-3A matchup, Ellender is at Morgan City in a key District 8-4A game and the local District 7-5A schedule is highlighted by H.L. Bourgeois at Thibodaux and South Lafourche at Terrebonne.

Also on the boys side on Tuesday, two of the top teams in the state will meet when Class 4A Vandebilt Catholic travels to 1A Central Catholic in nondistrict action.

On Tuesday in girls action, the local 7-5A slate includes H.L. Bourgeois at Thibodaux and South Lafourche at Terrebonne, and Vandebilt Catholic is at Central Catholic in a nondistrict matchup of two of the top girls programs in the state.

On Thursday in boys nondistrict play, H.L. Bourgeois is at Ellender, while in District 8-4A play Morgan City is at South Terrebonne and Assumption is at Vandebilt. On Friday, the Houma Christian Warriors (4-1 in district) have a huge district game at Country Day (6-0 in district), while in 7-5A games, New Iberia is at South Lafourche and Terrebonne is at Thibodaux. Also Friday, Terrebonne is at Thibodaux in a key District 7-5A girls game.

 

GIRLS TEAMS OF THE WEEK

The Central Lafourche Lady Trojans picked up two district wins last week after beating H.L. Bourgeois and Terrebonne to improve to 14-9 overall and 3-5 in District 7-5A.

Meanwhile, the E.D. White Catholic Lady Cardinals continued their stellar season by improving to 21-3 and 6-0 in District 7-3A with wins over St. Charles Catholic and Brusly.

 

BOYS TEAMS OF THE WEEK

The Houma Christian Warriors were the only area boys team to check in with three wins last week.

Houma Christian improved to 13-8 with wins over Ecole Classique (56-15), St. Martin's (57-54) and Grand Isle (45-35).

The Warriors are also 4-1 in District 10-1A. H.L. Bourgeois (20-5, 7-1 in District 7-5A) and Vandebilt (17-6, 4-0 in District 8-4A) each went 2-0 last week.

 

STARS OF THE WEEK

-- H.L. Bourgeois Shannon Jones scored 30 points in the Lady Braves' loss to Kierranika Howard (27 points) and Central Lafourche.

-- Chandler Arceneaux of South Terrebonne scored 28 points in a loss to Vandebilt.

-- Lionheart Leslie (28 points, 13 rebounds, five assists) and Elijah McGuire (21 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists) helped the Terriers top Ellender despite the Patriots getting 26 points from Cameron Parfait in the game.

-- Covenant Christian Academy's Datren Williams led the Lions to a win over Haynes Academy with 28 points.
