NAPOLEONVILLE — Assumption took two quick ones from E.D. White Catholic at the Assumption Softball Jamboree Friday on a cool but beautiful sunny afternoon.
The teams played two three inning games. In addition, play was not stopped if the home team was leading in the bottom of the last inning.
The Lady Cardinals got off to a fast start in game one. Bobbi Lynn Grabert drew a walk from Lady Mustang starter Kirsten Torres, and Abby Richard followed that up with a single to center. E.D. White starting pitcher Madison Rodrigue followed that with a grounder up the first-base line that advanced the runners.
Sydney Falcon hit a double that nearly cleared the left field wall, scoring Grabert and Richard for a 2-0 E.D. White lead.
Torres loaded the bases with two consecutive walks, but drew a weak grounder from Courtney Sanchez for the third out, stranding three.
Assumption got one back in the bottom of the first. Alissa Dehart drew a walk from Rodrigue. Torres, helping her own cause, bunted to Rodrigue, who overthrew first and allowed Dehart to round the bases to make it 2-1 at the end of one.
After a shaky start, Torres tightened things up in the second and third innings, allowing two hits while striking out two and not allowing a runner past second.
"We made a couple of plays. (Torres) settled down, she made some pitches, and we got out of the inning without it being too ugly," Assumption coach Boyd Fussel said. "The thing I'm proud of is that we came back. We fought back, and we tied it back up. That showed some good things for us."
Torres, who was seeing her first action since a volleyball injury required surgery, said she needed a little time to get her bearings.
"It was my first game back," Torres said. "I just needed to get comfortable and get back into the groove. I was just trying to let my defense work and get out of the jam."
Assumption got a runner on third in the second inning. Trinity Blanchard drew a walk, then advanced on a bunt and a passed ball. But Rodrigue got Amanda Gianelloni to fly out to left, leaving E.D. ahead 2-1 going into the third.
The Lady Mustangs took advantage of two E.D. White errors to get runners onto second and third with one out. Shortstop Sydney Bordis misplayed a ground ball from Torres that allowed her to reach first, then on the next play, underthrew the ball to second off a Tori Kern grounder that put runners on first and second.
Bre Landry took care of the rest with a homer to left for a 4-2 Assumption win. Because the coaches wanted to get their players more reps, play continued after Landry's "semi walk off" homer.
E.D. White took another first-inning lead in Game 2, when leadoff hitter Triston Gros reached first on a throwing error, then stole second and third before scoring on a passed ball, giving the Lady Cardinals a 1-0 advantage after half an inning.
Gianelloni, Assumption's leadoff hitter, returned the favor, reaching first on a error, then stealing second and third before beating the throw to home on Sunni Rae Blanchard's fielder's choice grounder to third.
Blanchard was thrown out at home, but by then Assumption had loaded the bases on two singles from Torres and Landry. Dehart drew a walk from Rodrigue, who also pitched Game 2, and Assumption led 2-1 after one.
"We have some girls playing out of position," E.D. White coach Linda Sanders said. "My shortstop and second baseman are playing out of position. We just beat ourselves. I'm not concerned. It's early. We're going to come back."
Bordis singled off of Assumption game two starter Kern, and scored on a Courtney Sanchez bunt to tie the game at two all.
Assumption made that 3-2 in bottom of the second on a misplayed ball to left field from Torres that let Gianelloni come home.
E.D. White didn't score in the top of the third, but the teams played the bottom of the third anyway, with Allie Iver taking over for Rodrigue. Assumption scored in the bottom of the third for a 4-2 win.
