H.L. Bourgeois boys upend Ellender, 66-59

At Gray, the Braves got 21 points from Marlin Bonvillain, 13 points from Takharri Gasery and 10 points from DeSean Walker in improving to 11-5 on the season with the 66-59 nondistrict win over Ellender on Friday night.

Ellender, which fell to 14-3 overall, got 23 points from Leland Alexander and 10 points each from Justin Johnson and Curtis Anderson.

The Patriots led 13-9 after the first quarter, but the Braves led 33-26 at halftime and 52-41 at the end of the third quarter.

“I thought we dominated inside early to get the lead,” Braves coach Andrew Caillouet said. “Both Takharri Gasery on offense and Tylenn Scott on defense were both big inside presences. We built up a big lead, but Leland Alexander then did a heck of a job on the offensive glass for them and got them back into the game. With all the up-and-down play these team do, it was ironic that it came down to inside play.”

Caillouet said Bonvillain, a senior, helped carry the Braves.

“He was playing on fumes all night,” Caillouet said. “He had to suck it up, and I thought he had a real gutty performance.”
